Chennai Super Kings leg spinner Imran Tahir was the highest wicket taker in the 12th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and for this reason he was awarded the Purple Cap.
Purple cap is given to the bowlers who take the most wickets in a season in the IPL. Tahir took 26 wickets in 17 innings of 17 matches this season. During this time his best performance was 4 for 12 runs. Tahir spent 431 runs this season.
Tahir has also become the highest wicket-taker in any one season. He broke the record of 24-24 wickets of Sunil Narine (2012) and Harbhajan Singh (2013). He became the second spinner to take the purple cap after Pragyan Ojha (21 wickets in 2010).
Let’s say that before Imran Tahir Purple Cap has won only one spinner and his name is Pragyan Ojha. Ojha took 21 wickets in the IPL in 2010 and won the title of the highest wicket in the tournament. Now this is the second time when a spinner has got the title.
In the second place, the Delhi Capitals’ Kagriso Rabaada, who made a total of 25 wickets in 12 matches with 368 runs. Rabada had to return to South Africa due to injury and this is why he could not play three matches. Here Tahir got the chance to beat Mawantan Rabada. Tahir also took two wickets in the final. This season’s best performance by Rabada was 4 for 21 runs.
Third place, Chennai’s Deepak Chahar remained. Chahal, who took three wickets in the final, took 22 wickets in 17 matches this season. Shreyas Gopal of Rajasthan and Khalil Ahmed of Sunrise Hyderabad remained in fourth and fifth place respectively. While Gopal has taken 20 wickets in 14 matches, Khalil has taken 19 wickets in 9 matches.
